ABOUT GOOGLE CLOUD FUNCTION
Google Cloud Function (GCF) is a lightweight, event-based, asynchronous compute solution that allows you to create small, single-purpose functions that respond to cloud events without the need to manage a server or a runtime environment. This technology is a part of Google Cloud’s serverless platform, allowing developers to run their applications, analytics, and machine learning workloads in the cloud without having to worry about infrastructure management.
GCF is popular among tech giants such as Spotify, Snapchat, and HSBC, who leverage this technology to scale their applications. For instance, Spotify uses GCF to manage its petabyte-scale data pipelines while Snapchat utilizes it for its massive real-time social media platform. HSBC, on the other hand, uses GCF to modernize its banking services, reaching over 40 million customers worldwide.
According to a recent study by Statista, Google Cloud’s market share has grown by 58% in the past year, largely due to the popularity of serverless technologies like GCF. Social media posts praising GCF’s scalability, ease of use, and integration with other Google Cloud services have garnered thousands of likes and shares, reflecting the technology’s broad appeal among developers and organizations alike.
ISSUES WITH GOOGLE CLOUD FUNCTION IN CHINA
While GCF is widely used globally, it faces significant challenges in the Chinese market due to both technical and regulatory issues. The Great Firewall of China, a censorship and surveillance project operated by the Chinese government, often leads to latency issues, slowing down the function execution times for GCF.
From a legal perspective, foreign companies operating in China need an Internet Content Provider (ICP) license issued by the Chinese government. Google Cloud, including GCF, does not currently hold an ICP license, which results in compliance issues for businesses using GCF in China.
Furthermore, GCF runs on Google Cloud infrastructure, which is not officially available in mainland China. This lack of local infrastructure further exacerbates the speed and loading issues for GCF in the country.
