Does Shopify work in China?

Shopify stores usually open in China at first, then degrade. The root cause is structural: Shopify's own developer docs state the storefront CDN is “backed by Cloudflare”, and neither Cloudflare's default network nor Fastly (used for media) has mainland-China nodes. Because Shopify is fully hosted, you cannot move the store or point it at a China CDN yourself. The fix is to keep Shopify, complete an ICP filing, and put a China delivery layer in front — see How to Speed Up Shopify in China. Worth deciding early: the arrangements that need no ICP filing are the ones that never enter mainland China, which is the same reason they do not fix the latency. The fast path and the filed path are the same path. Measured fact: from a probe inside mainland China (Alibaba Cloud cn-zhangjiakou), three runs, 2026-08-28, shopify.com loaded in a median 3.6 seconds (largest-contentful-paint 1.5s), completing all three runs.

What Shopify's documentation says, and what we measured from inside China

FactPrimary source
“Shopify provides merchants a world class content delivery network (CDN) backed by Cloudflare.” Shopify's docs present the CDN as an automatic platform feature — there is no documented way for a merchant to swap it for a China CDN. Shopify — Platform performance (official dev docs)
Cloudflare's standard network does not serve mainland China. Their China Network “is available as a separate subscription for customers on an Enterprise plan” and is “operated by Cloudflare's partner JD Cloud” — it is not part of Shopify's default setup. Cloudflare — China Network (official docs)
“You must have a valid ICP (Internet Content Provider) filing or license for each apex domain you wish to onboard” to the Cloudflare China Network — so there is no route to compliant China delivery that skips ICP. Cloudflare — China Network (official docs)
Delivery from inside mainland China — the only arrangement that removes the cross-border round trip — carries the regulatory gate with it: "ICP filing applies only to servers located in the Chinese mainland", and the filing binds to the access provider, not only the domain. Alibaba Cloud — ICP filing prerequisites
In 3 of 3 attempts from a probe inside mainland China (Alibaba Cloud cn-zhangjiakou), measured 2026-08-28, Shopify finished loading — median time to first byte 575ms, median largest-contentful-paint 1,532ms. 21YunBox — 280-site China delivery census, measured from inside mainland China

ISSUES WITH Shopify SITES IN MAINLAND CHINA

1. Missing China Compliance

Most Shopify sites with custom domains can initially be accessed in China (check if your site is blocked in China using this tool). However, soon the site will be blocked or perform unstably due to being out of China’s Compliance.

To help you understand better, the Chinese government has outlined five obligations companies must follow when hosting their websites in China.

The most common license companies will get to host content in China is – ICP Filing or ICP license, and you can learn more about ICP and how to get it in this post.

2. CDN Performs Poorly in China

Shopify sites use Cloudflare’s Content delivery network (CDN) to distribute the site content globally. It means your images and video content are distributed thru Cloudflare (unless you use a custom CDN service provider for your site).

Like most CDNs in the west, Cloudflare does not have mainland China support by default. If you want China-side acceleration, you need to adjust your site’s resources, images, videos, and javascript to load fast in China.

Keep in mind that if your site loads fast in the west, it does not mean it will load fast in China. Typically Shopify sites take 30+ seconds or are unable to load in China.

Your visitors in China will see a half-load or broken site (like the above diagram). Not sure how your Shopify site loads in China? You can ask us to run a speed test for you or have your team inside China’s firewall tell you how your site load in China.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Shopify work in China?
Initially most stores load, but performance is poor and reliability decays over time. The two root causes are content delivery (Shopify's default CDN has no mainland service for your store) and missing China compliance (no ICP).
Why is my Shopify store so slow or broken in China?
Two structural reasons, both documented by the vendors themselves. First, delivery: Shopify's CDN is “backed by Cloudflare”, and Cloudflare's standard network has no mainland nodes — their China Network is a separate Enterprise subscription run with JD Cloud that Shopify does not include. Second, embedded apps and trackers that are blocked in China can hang the page entirely. See our full guide: How to Speed Up Shopify in China.
Can I get an ICP license for a Shopify store?
Yes — the ICP attaches to your custom domain and your China delivery arrangement, not to Shopify itself. 21YunBox handles the ICP process and serves your storefront compliantly to mainland users while you keep operating Shopify as usual.
Can't we just buy Cloudflare's China Network for our Shopify store?
Not directly. Cloudflare's China Network is “available as a separate subscription for customers on an Enterprise plan” and is applied to domains you control on Cloudflare — whereas Shopify manages the storefront CDN for you as a platform feature. It also requires “a valid ICP filing or license for each apex domain”. In practice, enterprise merchants put a China delivery layer in front of the Shopify storefront and run the ICP filing alongside it — which is what 21YunBox does.
