Does Wix work in China?
Whether you can run a Wix site for mainland China comes down to where that site is allowed to be hosted — not how fast it loads. Wix is a managed, closed platform: every Wix site is served only from Wix's own infrastructure outside mainland China, and Wix gives you no way to move it onto a licensed China host.
By Wix's own pages, sites "run on Google Cloud, AWS and Fastly" from data centers and CDN nodes outside the mainland, and none of Wix's listed entities or sub-processors sit in mainland China. Operating a website legally from inside China requires an ICP filing, which is granted only for sites running on a licensed mainland host — a door an offshore-only builder cannot open. A second door opens if your site collects personal data: a contact form, a store order or a member login would send that data abroad, bringing PIPL's cross-border rules into play. Whether Wix “works” in mainland China is a question about where your site is allowed to be hosted — a compliance question, not a speed one. Door one — Wix hosts only offshore, so there is no ICP path
Wix runs in the cloud, but never inside the mainland. In Wix’s own words your site “runs on Google Cloud, AWS and Fastly,” delivered from “200+ edge nodes worldwide” and Wix’s “own exclusive data centers” — and Wix’s own list of sub-processors places every entity and every piece of third-party infrastructure outside mainland China. There is no China region and no option to run a Wix site on a host you control.
Serving a public-facing site from inside the mainland turns on an ICP filing. That filing attaches to the mainland host the site actually runs on — the regime under State Council Order No. 292 (2000) and MIIT Decree No. 33 (2005). Because Wix serves every site from its offshore cloud and offers no China host, a site left on Wix has no route to that ICP filing: the in-country door stays shut, however the site is built.
A custom domain doesn’t move the hosting
It is easy to assume that pointing a China domain at Wix, or connecting a custom domain in the dashboard, makes a site “China-hosted.” It does not. Connecting a domain changes the address visitors type, not the servers the site runs on — the site still loads from Wix’s offshore cloud. So the ICP door does not open by adding a domain; it opens only when the site runs on a licensed mainland host, which a closed, offshore-only platform cannot give you.
Door two — forms, orders and logins send China data offshore
If your Wix site collects personal data from Chinese visitors — a contact form, a Wix Stores order, a members-area login — that data leaves China for Wix’s offshore systems. Under China’s Personal Information Protection Law that is a cross-border transfer: the site operator — you, not Wix — must give notice, obtain separate consent, and satisfy one transfer mechanism (a CAC security assessment, the CAC standard contract, or certification). Since the CAC’s March 2024 rules, a non-CIIO moving fewer than 100,000 individuals’ non-sensitive personal information in a calendar year is exempt from all three (PIPL Chapter III, Articles 38–43).
This is a risk picture, not a verdict. Whether the hosting door or the data door weighs more on you depends on whether you operate from inside China and what your Wix site collects — settle it with counsel before you commit to a build.
