Launched in 2004, Sogou was initially operated as a separate division within Sohu, a NASDAQ-listed Chinese tech company. In 2006, Sogou launched Sogou Pinyin typing input, quickly becoming dominant in China for desktop and mobile PCs. The year after, Sogou launched the Sogou Browser, to power up its Sogou search engine. Tencent has invested $448 million for a minority share in Sogou to compete with Baidu.
Sogou is now a key player in the Chinese search engine market, second to Baidu, with users converted mostly from its 480 million users’ Sogou Pinyin typing input.
