Short answerHosting a website in mainland China is two decisions, not one. Where it is served from determines performance — anywhere outside the mainland, including Hong Kong and Singapore, means every request crosses a congested, filtered border. Whether you can serve from inside determines whether that option is even open to you: it requires an ICP filing, issued to a mainland China legal entity and bound to whoever serves the traffic. The two are the same decision, because the fast path and the filed path are the same path. What is left to choose is whether you rebuild inside China or put a compliant delivery layer in front of the platform you already run.

What hosting a website in China actually involves

Can we host our website in China without a Chinese company?

Not in your own name — the filing is issued to a mainland legal entity. The two routes are to incorporate onshore, or to work with a partner that holds the filing and stands as the entity of record while you keep your platform, content and IP.

Is Hong Kong hosting a reasonable substitute?

For static content, partly. Hong Kong sits outside the Great Firewall, so APIs, form submissions and dynamic content still cross it. It needs no filing precisely because it never enters the mainland — the same reason it does not solve performance.

Do we have to move our whole platform to China?

No, and it is usually the wrong trade. Rebuilding inside China means a second codebase and content workflow to run permanently. A delivery layer in front of your existing platform passes the same two gates while leaving your global stack as the single source of truth.

What is the first thing to sort out?

The domain. A domain registered abroad has to be transferred to a mainland registrar before it can be filed, and on real projects the slow part is finding who inside the company controls the registrar account. Start that before any infrastructure work.
